Portrait of Charles II, King of Spain, as a Child
Canvas
105.5 x 77 cm
Charles II of Spain (Madrid 1661 - 1770), son of Philip IV and Mary Anne of Austria, became king at the age of four on the death of his father. He was also King of Naples, Sardinia and Sicily, Duke of Burgundy and Sovereign of the Low Countries. Both during his personal reign from 1677 and before that during his mother's regency, his era was characterised by the weakness of his power. His reign was also characterised by incessant wars with France. Married twice without issue, his succession gave rise to a struggle between Austria and France. Louis XIV, whose mother and wife were close relatives, and the Habsburgs of Austria tried to assert their hereditary rights. Charles II succeeded in imposing the French party, which he felt was better able to defend Spain's interests, and it was Louis XIV's grandson, Philip V, who ascended the Spanish throne, bringing about a dynastic change.
