Portrait of Pope Pius V
Canvas
133 x 105 cm
Inscribed top left Pio V PM
Pulzone and his studio produced several versions of this popular composition depicting Pope Pius V, with variations in size and background decoration. The main full-length version, executed by Pulzone, is considered to be the original copy in the Palazzo Colonna in Rome, and does not include the table or crucifix on the right. Pius V, born Antonio Michele Ghislieri, was pope from 1566 to 1572. A major figure in the Counter-Reformation, he rigorously applied the decisions of the Council of Trent and strengthened the authority of the Catholic Church in the face of Protestantism. He is also known for having supported the victorious Holy League at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 against the Ottoman Empire. Canonised in 1712, he remains one of the great reforming popes of the 16th century.
