Philip V of Spain, born in Versailles on 19 December 1683, was the second son of the Grand Dauphin and the grandson of Louis XIV. Holder of the Duchy of Anjou before his accession to the throne, he became King of Spain in 1700 on the death of Charles II, the last Spanish sovereign of the House of Habsburg. His accession, which ushered in the Bourbon dynasty in Spain, sparked off the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), a major conflict between the European powers over the continental dynastic balance. Despite the Treaties of Utrecht, Philip V retained the Spanish crown, while renouncing his rights to the French throne. His reign marked a profound administrative and political reorganisation of the Spanish monarchy based on the Bourbon model.
Marie-Anne of Bavaria, born on 28 November 1660 in Munich, was the daughter of Ferdinand-Marie, Elector of Bavaria. She married the Grand Dauphin Louis of France in 1680 and became Dauphin of France under the reign of Louis XIV. The mother of several blood princes, including the future Philip V of Spain, she played an important role in European dynastic alliances at the end of the 17th century. Her untimely death at Versailles in 1690 put an end to a union intended to strengthen the ties between the houses of Bourbon and Wittelsbach.
