Our painting is reminiscent of the allegory for the birth of Louis XIV painted by Gabriel Blanchard in 1665 and kept at the Château de Versailles. This painting was his reception piece at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture.
The theatricality inherited from the Italian Baroque is recognisable in our work, as are the strong colours inspired by the Renaissance. This composition might remind us of the lecture Jacques Blanchard gave in 1671 at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture on the quarrel between drawing and colour, a lecture that was a great success.
