This important portrait of the Grand Dauphin is clearly related to the prototype used by Hyacinthe Rigaud in 1693 for his portrait of Louis-Francois de Croissy.
The model is standing, with a half-body view; the background opens onto a landscape, while the helmet on the table, accompanied by the baton of command held in the subject's hand, recalls his military function.
As is often the case with paintings associated with Hyacinthe Rigaud, the question of authorship is a complex one, given that his models circulated and were themselves repeated many times by his studio. In the case of our painting, the rendering of the textiles and the face leads us quite naturally to the Bâtiments du Roi. This department produced copies of important paintings for the sovereign or for wealthy courtiers. These were intended to disseminate the royal aesthetic and became veritable propaganda tools, as courtiers sought to please the sovereign by commissioning numerous representations of him or his close relations.
These works, which were totally controlled by the authorities, were a veritable parallel production to the paintings in Rigaud's studio.
Louis de France, also known as the Grand Dauphin, was the eldest son of Louis XIV and Maria Theresa of Austria. He died before his father in 1711, but his son Philip V ascended the Spanish throne. He was also the grandfather of the future King of France, Louis XV. A great soldier, he made a name for himself by capturing the citadel of Philippsburg in 1688, during the war of the League of Augsburg.
