17th century FRENCH SCHOOL
Portrait of Louis XIV in armour (1638-1715)
Oil on canvas
H: 72 cm W: 60 cm
Oxidized varnish, old repaints out of tune in the face
Our portrait of Louis XIV in armour is based on the engraving by Robert Nanteuil (1623-1678). Nanteuil was one of the few artists allowed access to the monarch to paint his portrait. Anecdotes recounted by Charles Perrault tell us that Nanteuil liked to entertain the sovereign by telling him "little stories", in an attempt to lighten his expression. This beautifully crafted painting is set in an oval, integrated into the composition, against a lighter background.
