The Marquise de Montespan came to the French court as a member of the Queen's household. She became Louis XIV's mistress around 1667 and influenced life at the Château de Versailles with her sharp mind and taste for the arts to the point of becoming, in Saint-Simon's words, "the centre of the Court". Jean de la Fontaine and Molière were among her protégés. She also decorated the walls of her flats with paintings. Seven children were born of her union with the king. In the 1680s, she was finally dismissed by Louis XIV, who preferred Madame de Maintenon. She left Versailles for good in 1691.
