Inscribed on the back of the canvas: "Euphrasie de Garaud, wife of Messire Melchior de Roquemorel haute, died on 10 July 1754. In her castle of Saleich near Cazères. Sénéchaussée de Toulo[use]".
In 1746, Jeanne Catherine Euphrasie de Garaud married Nicolas-Melchior de Roquemaurel, Esquire, Lord of Saleich. The artist of this painting was openly inspired by the great French portrait painters of the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV, Nicolas de Largillière, Hyacinthe Rigaud and François de Troy.
