Inscriptions in pen on the reverse, in a period frame.
This small copper is the presumed portrait of Françoise de Sévigné, Countess of Grignan. The letters she exchanged with her mother Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de Sévigné, are among the most famous in French literature. The Comtesse de Grignan was renowned for her beauty and wit. At the age of sixteen, she even had the honour of dancing the first entrance with Louis XIV. She was also the cousin of Roger de Bussy-Rabutin, a famous libertine at the court of Louis XIV, who was exiled for his Histoire amoureuse des Gaules.
The size of our portrait reflects the intimate nature of the work.
