Philippe VIGNON (1638 - 1701), Attributed to
Portrait of Marie-Louise Elisabeth d'Orléans (1695-1719)
Oval canvas
42 x 33 cm
Marie-Louise Élisabeth d'Orléans, daughter of Philippe II d'Orléans and Françoise-Marie de Bourbon, legitimated granddaughter of Louis XIV, was one of the most famous figures of the Regency. Married in 1710 to Charles de France, Duke of Berry, grandson of Louis XIV, she became Duchess of Berry and led a lavish and controversial life at court. Renowned for her taste for luxury, her parties and her influence during the Regency, she embodied the brilliant, libertine spirit of the early 18th century. Her flamboyant personality inspired numerous official and allegorical portraits by the great artists of her time.
