Pierre GOBERT (1662-1744), entourage of
Presumed portrait of Louise Françoise de Bourbon, known as Mademoiselle de Nantes
Oval oil on canvas
45 x 37 cm
Restorations.
In a carved and gilt wood frame.
Our painting is a presumed portrait of Mademoiselle de Nantes, daughter of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan. Although the daughter of a royal favourite, she was legitimised like her brothers and sisters by the king through letters patent. Married to the grandson of the Grand Condé, she became Duchess of Bourbon and Princess of Condé. The children born of the relationship between Madame de Montespan and Louis XIV received special recognition at court.
During their father's time, their position was at least secure, and Louis XIV ensured that they had profitable marriages. Raised by Madame de Maintenon, who was to become the king's last favourite, their relationship with her probably contributed to their favour right up until the death of the sovereign.
