Philippe II d'Orléans was a prince of the French royal family and nephew of Louis XIV. On the death of the Sun King in 1715, he became regent of the kingdom during the minority of Louis XV. His government, known as the Regency (1715-1723), was characterised by a relaxation of political life and a major intellectual and artistic boom. A cultivated man and patron of the arts, he played a major role in the transition between the Grand Siècle and the Age of Enlightenment.
