Jean Duprat, born in Avignon on 22 December 1760, was a political figure of the French Revolution in the Comtat Venaissin. A silk merchant before his public involvement, he took part in the movements in favour of Avignon joining France and became mayor of the town in 1792. Elected as a deputy to the National Convention, he was one of the Girondins and spoke out in favour of condemning Louis XVI. Involved in the political struggles of the Terror, he was arrested after the fall of the Girondins and guillotined in Paris on 31 October 1793. His career illustrates the revolutionary tensions that shook Avignon and the south of France at the time.
