Lazare Hoche (1768-1797) was a French general of the Revolution, known for his energy, discipline and military victories despite his death at the tender age of 29. Born in Versailles into a modest family, he joined the army before distinguishing himself during the Revolutionary Wars.
He played an important role in the pacification of the Vendée and in the fight against royalist revolts. Hoche is also famous for his victorious campaigns against foreign armies, particularly on the Rhine. A staunch Republican, he was admired for his courage, organisational skills and closeness to the soldiers.
