Description
A circular silvered metal REFRIGERATOR, the body engraved with the coat of arms of the Orléans family, surmounted by a royal crown. It stands on four tongue-shaped feet with leafy attachments. The side grips are decorated with leaves at the base. Christofle hallmarks, numbered 5880/46, and Château d'Eu mark surmounted by a crown. Château d'Eu mark surmounted by a royal crown. Height: 10.5 cm - Diameter: 24 cm The silvering is worn, the upper part is missing. Notes: Our warmer was commissioned by Louis-Philippe, King of the French French (1773-1850), for the service of his Château d'Eu in Normandy, a summer residence inherited from his mother. The first order was placed in 1844, when Charles Christofle presented his silvering and electrolytic gilding technique, perfected in 1842, at the Exhibition. Seduced by this innovation, the King placed his first orders. This first set was followed by two more orders in 1845 and 1846, confirming Christofle as one of the monarchy's prestigious suppliers, with the title of "King's Goldsmith". An identical set sold on 14 Oct 2008 at Christie's - Sold for €3,000
