Founded in Birmingham in 1836, the company initially specialised in improving gilding techniques. As early as 1838, it developed and patented an electroplating process for depositing one metal on another, paving the way for the production of silver objects by electrolysis from 1840 onwards. Financially supported by Josiah Mason from 1842, the company became Elkington, Mason & Co. until 1861, and enjoyed great success. It introduced electrotyping as a manufacturing method and gained international recognition, notably at the 1851 Universal Exhibition in London. The electroplating patents were acquired the same year by Charles Christofle for France.
