Auguste de Moltzheim was a French officer, draughtsman and illustrator, specialising in uniformology.
He volunteered for the artillery train at the age of 18, was appointed lieutenant in the artillery corps (1854), took part in the Crimea campaign (1855), was appointed captain (1860), served in the Algerian campaign (1860-1861) and was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur (1869).
