MARQUIS JOUFFROY D'ABBANS, Claude François Dorothée, (1751-1832), knight of the order of Saint-Louis. Miniature on ivory depicting the marquis de ¾ face. On the back, the handwritten inscription: "Inventor of steam navigation Lyon 1783. Married to Madeleine de Pingon de Valliez...". Copper circled. In a blackened wooden frame. Diameter: 70 mm. JOUFFROY D'ABBANS Claude François Dorothée. An engineer with a passion for mechanics, he decided to apply the steam engine improved by Watt to navigation. He designed the first steamboat to actually sail, the Pyroscaphe, and in 1776 carried out the first steam navigation experiments on the Doubs (and in Lyon on the Saône).
