TAXILE MAXIMIN DOAT (1851 - 1938) Beautiful "paste on paste" porcelain vase decorated with scales and snakes in emerald green outline and flanked by 3 medallions of soap bubble and reddish Gorgon heads, the white background with blue, pink and brown inlays. H: 22 D: 12 cm. Signature under the base in red: his stamp followed by OAT Sèvres. Probably from the "Villa Kaolin" workshop in Sèvres between 1898 and 1909. The decoration is very close to the works of the Manufacture de Sèvres during the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and can also be compared to the signature with a snake decoration. * Taxile Doat was an influential decorator and modeller who revolutionised the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres from 1877 to 1905. Renowned for his mastery of pâte-sur-pâte and Grand Feu enamels, he was a pioneer of the Art Nouveau style. His work at Sèvres came to an end after the Universal Exhibition of 1900 due to his "excessive notoriety" and his private workshop. (2 chips at the base; 1 crack in the shell; firing defect around the neck).
