Description

Henry Morton STANLEY, (seated centre) with Serpa Pinto, Roberto YVENS and Hermenegildo Brito CAPELLIO, accompanied by the auxiliaries of their Congo expedition, shortly after its arrival on the west coast.
Silver print dated 4 or 5 September 1877, annotated on verso.
Format 24x18 cm.
Note: In 1877, Henry Morton Stanley met in Loanda (Angola), the three Portuguese explorers Alexandre de Serpa Pinto, Roberto Ivens and Hermenegildo Brido Capello, members of a mission organised by the Lisbon Geographical Society. The aim of the mission was to cross Southern Africa in order to assert Portugal's ambitions for the territories between Mozambique and Angola, and to thwart British claims in the region.
