Description
Daniel P. BIEBUYCK (1925-2019). RARE set of thirty-eight silver photographs of KIVU annotated on the back. Sizes: 12.5 x 9 cm (approx.) and 17 x 11.8 cm... Note: Dr Biebuyck was born in Belgium in 1925. A graduate of the University of Ghent, where he studied classics, law and anthropology, he did postgraduate studies in anthropology for a year at the University of London before obtaining his doctorate summa cum laude in Ghent in 1954. In 1947, he met Frans Olbrechts, director of the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) and a teacher of ethnology and ethnic arts in Ghent, and gave up the study of law to devote himself to ethnology. In August 1949, he left for the Belgian Congo as the first professional anthropologist commissioned by IRSAC, sent to the eastern province of Kivu. At the time, he had no specific instructions about how to organise his research. He took advantage of this room for manoeuvre to study several peoples living around the shores of lakes Kivu and Tanganyika. From 1957 to 1961, Biebuyck taught anthropology and African arts at the University of Lovanium in Léopoldville (Kinshasa), where he also founded an ethnographic museum. He took part in the making of the film Les seigneurs de la forêt (1958), subsidised by the Fondation internationale scientifique (FIS), created in 1956 on the initiative of Leopold III, as an adviser on the activities of the Lega and Nyanga peoples. During the same period, he was appointed a member of the Land Commission for the Congo. He has also been a professor or visiting professor at the University of Liège in Belgium, the University of London, Yale University and New York University.
