Description
KUBA, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Plant fibres, fabric, cowries, beads, metal.
Two "Laket Mishiing" headdresses worn by men holding a title at the royal court, affirming their status and hierarchy in society.
The men received these headdresses at the end of an initiation process that signalled their transformation into mature members of Kuba society. As they climbed the social ladder and took up positions requiring greater experience and responsibility, their headgear continually changed to reflect their achievements.
This indicates that our two dome-shaped bonnets, made of cowries, pearls and copper, belonged to very high-ranking men.
16.5x15.5 cm and 13x15.5 cm.
