Description
KUBA, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Hardwood, copper, pearls, cowries, seed pods, plant fibres, animal skins.
This 'Bwoom' palm mask from the Angelo Turconi collection is directly linked to the royal court, thanks to the quality of its sculpture and the richness of its decoration and symbols.
It embodies a subversive force and is often danced in conflict with the masked figure Woot. According to another version, it could represent the king's younger brother, a person of Twa origin or a commoner.
H. 60 cm.
Note: Kuba mythology revolves around three characters, each represented by a masked figure: Woot, the creator and founder of the reigning dynasty; Woot's wife; and Bwoom.
Literature: Sura Dji-Visages et racines du Zaïre. Musée des Arts Décoratifs Paris.
