KWESE, Democratic Republic of Congo. Wood, natural polychrome pigments, plant fibres. The Kwese came from the west and were colonised by the Yaka. They live around the River Kwilu and have Mbala, Suku and other neighbours. This explains the Suku influence perceptible in this 'Hemba' initiation mask, topped by a quadruped and featuring a heart-shaped face. 30.5x24.5x22 cm. (slight erosion).
