Description
MBUTI/BAMBUTI, Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of Congo. Beaten bark bark, pigments. A piece of tapa cloth made by the Mbuti Pygmy hunter-gatherers. It is the men who prepare the tapa using the soft, resistant bark of a species of Ficus, and then the tapa is soaked and decorated by the women. The decoration here seems minimalist, yet it is important to the pygmies because it is linked to their creation myth. 75x71 cm. Literature : -" Pygmies?" paintings on beaten bark by the Mbuti (Haut-Zaïre). Robert Farris Thompson and Serge Bahuchet. - Art pictural des pygmées", Barbier-Mueller Museum, 1990.
