Description
MBUTI/BAMBUTI, Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of Congo. Beaten bark bark, pigments. A piece of tapa cloth made by the Mbuti Pygmy hunter-gatherers. It is the men who prepare the tapa, using the soft, resistant bark of a species of Ficus, and then the tapa is soaked and decorated by the women. The language of signs offered by the motifs of this vegetable ink decoration was a real revelation and an explosion for artists at the beginning of the 20th century. 97x40 cm.
