Description
BUSHOONG/KUBA, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Textiles, whether worn on the body as clothing or displayed independently, were central to the cultural expression of the Kuba. Raffia, made from the leaves of the raffia palm, is prepared and woven by men on horizontal single-heald looms, then given to women to sew, dye and decorate. For the Kuba, the amount of time spent creating the loincloths was seen as an intrinsic part of their value and appeal.
This large ceremonial 'Ntsahkishwepy' loincloth of a noblewoman is of exceptional quality. It was worn for important ceremonies, particularly 'Itul' ceremonies. The intricate decoration is made up of bold, inventive motifs that reflect Kuba beliefs about social responsibility, ethnic identity and religious belief.
Such a precious loincloth could be considered royal tribute and used as currency.
370x100 cm.
