Textiles, whether worn on the body as clothing or displayed independently, were central to the cultural expression of the Kuba. Raffia, made from the leaves of the raffia palm, is prepared and woven by men on horizontal single-heald looms, then given to women who sew, dye and decorate. For the Kuba, the amount of time spent creating the loincloths was seen as an intrinsic part of their value and appeal.
Large ceremonial loincloth 'Ntsahkishwepy' with rich geometric decoration. It was worn for important ceremonies, particularly "Itul" ceremonies.
