SÈVRES, 18th century, 1771 Round soft-paste porcelain bowl with a polychrome decoration of scattered roses and green leaves surrounded by a band on a ‘Fallot blue’ background, adorned with gold partridge-eye motifs and ‘inlaid’ bouquets of flowers. Rocaille volutes and fan motifs in gold on the rim. Marked: interlaced LLs, date letter S for 1771, mark of the painter Edmé-François Bouillat. H. 8.4 cm. D. 26 cm This service was produced by the Royal Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory over a short period between 1769 and 1771, corresponding to the date letters Q and S. ‘Fallot blue’ is a background colour created in 1764 at the Royal Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory by Jean-Armand Fallot. It was first used on a table service presented by Louis XV to Prince Starhemberg, the Austrian ambassador to France, as a diplomatic gift.
