- Private collection, Besançon, ever since
Nicknamed the ‘Rockefeller of the Andes’, the multi-billionaire Simón Iturri Patiño was born in 1860 in Bolivia and died in 1947 in Buenos Aires. He made his fortune in the tin mining industry. He settled in France with his family in 1912. In 1918, he commissioned a major silver service from Chaumet, one of the few private commissions for silverware ever undertaken by the firm. Of his five children, his son Anténor (born in Bolivia in 1896 and died in New York in 1982) was a businessman and art collector, who amassed an exceptional collection of furniture and works of art.
A dozen auctions took place following Anténor Patiño’s death, the first of which was organised by Sotheby’s in 1982. Our vegetable containers were acquired at a sale in Versailles in 1987, which included works of art from the Patiño collection, and have remained in this Besançon collection – now being offered for sale – ever since.
