As part of her personal artistic practice, Charlotte de Rothschild benefited from the guidance and tuition of Paul Flandrin, Hercule Trachel and Nélie Jacquemart-André. With Hercule Trachel, who became her teacher in 1858, she travelled to Italy on more than five occasions, particularly to Venice, a city that inspired her and became a central theme in her work from 1858 onwards. The watercolour views of Venice by Pierre-Justin Ouvrié, twenty years her senior, must undoubtedly have been a major source of inspiration for Charlotte.
