Description
RONSARD (Pierre de) Paris, Nicolas Buon, 1623. The Works […], revised, expanded and illustrated with commentaries and observations. 2 substantial folio volumes, wine-coloured morocco, covers decorated with lace motifs in gold, ribbed spine adorned with gold motifs, gilt edges, interior framing with gold motifs (modern binding). ‘The most complete and the finest of Ronsard’s works’ (Seymour de Ricci). Title-frontispiece, title vignette in the second volume and 12 plates in the text (all but one of which are separate from the text) featuring portraits, all engraved on copper, as well as a wood-engraved portrait of Marc-Antoine Muret in the text. The portraits were engraved by Claude Mellan, Jean Picquet and Thomas de Leu. Pages 875–876 appear, with variations, both at the end of the first volume and at the beginning of the second volume. A fine copy in a pleasing anonymous binding, in the style of 18th-century lace bindings. Spine very slightly faded, minimal scuffing (particularly at the corners). Bibliography: Tchemerzine, IX, p. 485. Brunet, IV, 1376. Rahir, 620.
