Letters from Madame de Sévigné, her family and her friends.
14 vols., in-4, midnight blue morocco, three gilt fillets framing the covers, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs, red morocco linings, mosaic-style gilt coat of arms in the centre of the endpapers, gilt border, gilt edges (Chambolle-Duru).
Edition prepared by Louis Monmerqué. The illustrations from the album are bound into the volumes, together with the explanatory sheets, and the set is complemented by numerous separate plates, engraved on wood or on a block, printed on applied Chinese paper. In total: 760 plates.
Very slight scuffs to the bindings; otherwise a very fine copy with Madame de Sévigné’s coat of arms gilded and inlaid on the endpapers.
Provenance: – Duchess of Berry (bookplate from the Château de Rosny, bearing the motto ‘la Solitude’).
