Description
STERNE (Laurent) Paris, Amsterdam, J. E. Gabriel Dufour, successor to Defer de Maisonneuve, Year VII [1799]. A Sentimental Journey, followed by Yorick’s Letters to Eliza. 2 vols. folio (33.5 x 25.3 cm), red long-grain half-maroquin with corner pieces, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs, marbled edges (Noulhac binding). This is the most remarkable edition of Sterne’s famous novel, printed by Didot on large-format vellum paper. It is adorned with six delightful hors-texte illustrations by Monsiau, engraved on copper by Dambrun, Miger, Patas and Pauquet. These are presented here as pre-letter proofs. An exceptional copy featuring a set of engravings printed on blue paper, re-mounted on grey-blue paper, and an original, unsigned watercolour by an artist of the period. It depicts the scene between Yorick and the monk, which differs significantly from Monsiau’s engraving. The set of proofs on blue paper comes from the Olry-Rœderer collection. Very slight rubbing to the bindings (slightly more pronounced on the headbands). Rare foxing. Provenance: – F. Bishop Cortlandt (bookplate; 1948 sale, lot 304). – Raphaël Esmerian (bookplate; sale in Paris, 6 June 1973, Part 3, lot 95). Bibliography: Cohen, 556 ‘A very fine edition’. Brunet, V, 533.
