Attributed to Michele MARIESCHI (Venice, 1710 – 1743) Venetian capriccio featuring the Church of the Salute with figures Oil on canvas Venetian capriccio with the Church of the Salute featuring figures, oil on canvas, attributed to M. Marieschi 22.44 x 10.55 in. 57 x 103 cm Provenance: Acquired from the Gismondi Gallery between 1998 and 2000; Private European collection The expanse of landscape unfolding panoramically across this canvas is the setting for an architectural capriccio whose composition evokes the art of the Venetian painter Michele Marieschi. In the foreground, on the left, a ruined arch flanked by a gallery supported by Corinthian columns faces, on the other side of the road, a building whose portico of Doric columns shelters a porphyry sarcophagus. Along the winding road, along which a few figures are walking, stands the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice, standing out majestically against a vast bluish landscape, spanned by a bridge and stretching into the background. The choice to depict this Venetian monument, the way the artist lingers on the activities of the figures moving amongst the ancient ruins, and the brushwork—as energetic in its details as it is meticulous in its rendering of the atmosphere—bring this work close to Marieschi’s own style. The artist trained under Canaletto and Gaspare Diziani whilst painting theatre sets. This early experience fostered in him a keen sense of composition and a taste for architectural whimsy. After a trip to Germany, he returned to Venice in 1737, married, and then significantly expanded his studio. In 1741, he published, amongst other works, a collection of twenty-two views entitled *Magnificentores Selectioresque Urbis Venetiarum Prospectus*, but he died shortly afterwards, aged 32.
