Description
LIMOGES ENAMELLED PLATE ON COPPER
By Pierre Reymond (1513–1584), depicting the month of June, Limoges, 1560
The plate is enamelled in grisaille on a black background, enhanced with pinkish flesh tones and orange flames. It depicts a scene from the series on the labours of the twelve months, based on Etienne Delaune: the month of June is illustrated here by a seated couple holding the sheep they are shearing on their laps, watched by a shepherd leaning on his staff, against a backdrop of rural landscape and a village in the distance. The border is adorned with a frieze of centaurs holding leather cartouches and two bucrania; at the bottom, a cartouche bears the inscription ‘IVIN’ for June. On the reverse, a bust of a Moor in a medallion framed by leather scrollwork, and the rim decorated with dragons and cartouches bearing the inscriptions PIERE/ REYMO(ND)/ 1560.
D.: 17 cm (6 ¾ in.)
A Limoges polychrome enamel plate, by Pierre Reymond (1513–1584), dated 1560
A plate held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon (Inv. L 442) features a similar scene with a few variations, particularly in the backgrounds.
