Description
A PAIR OF LIMOGES ENAMEL-PAINTED COPPER CUPS By Jean de Court (active in Limoges c. 1555–1585), depicting the Flood and the Crossing of the Red Sea; monogrammed ‘IC’ Grey-scale enamel on copper on a black background, highlighted with salmon-coloured flesh tones and gilding; the interior of one cup depicts the Flood, with numerous figures in the foreground attempting to escape the floodwaters, and Noah’s Ark in the background. The other depicts the crossing of the Red Sea, with Moses and the Hebrew people on the left, gazing at Pharaoh on his chariot as he is swept away by the waves along with his entire army. Both Old Testament scenes are partly inspired by engravings by Etienne Delaune. The reverse sides are adorned with friezes of heart-shaped rays, palmettes, architectural motifs, mascarons and fruit vases set within interlacing patterns of cut leather bearing the monogram ‘IC’. The undersides of the feet are decorated with small fleur-de-lis and star motifs, centred on a radiating gilded design against a black background. H.: 13 and 10 cm (5 and 4 in.) Diameter: 25 and 26 cm (9 ¾ and 10 ¼ in.) A pair of Limoges parcel-gilt and polychrome enamel cups, by Jean de Court (active in Limoges circa 1555–1585), monogrammed IC Several bowls and dishes monogrammed by Jean de Court or Maître IC feature similar scenes; for the Flood, a bowl in the Musée National de la Renaissance (E. For the crossing of the Red Sea, a bowl from the Louvre (MR 2522-47) on loan to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Limoges.
