This charming twilight view of the apse of Notre-Dame Cathedral was painted from the Quai de Montebello by the Norman painter Albert Lebourg.
Visible in this painting, his artistic affinity for light and its variations naturally aligns him with the Impressionists, with whom he exhibited at their salons in 1879 and 1880. Lebourg juxtaposes colours with a vibrant brushstroke, sketches forms in a concise manner and emphasises the interplay of tones between the various elements that make up his works. In this view, Notre-Dame and its bluish shadow stand out against an orange sky illuminated by the last glimmers of daylight.
The artist’s body of work includes numerous variations on this subject. Much like Claude Monet’s series of depictions of Rouen Cathedral, Lebourg captures the apse of Notre-Dame at different times of day and throughout the seasons.
We would like to thank Mr François Lespinasse for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work, based on photographs, in an email dated 20 May 2026.
