Description
NKISI Kongo ‘Siamese’ nkisi nkonde statuette. 20th century. Height: 57 cm. Heavy, dark-coloured wood. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection. Description: This fetish is distinctive in that it has two heads, emerging from a shared torso, presumably to increase its effectiveness (twins are special beings and possess powers that ordinary mortals do not have). The cap on each head features a mirror. A mirror is set on the front in the central section. A buffalo horn divides the back into two parts. The whole piece is studded with numerous spikes, suggesting that the statuette has been activated many times, whilst also making the sculpture considerably heavier.
