Description
NKISI
Kongo nkisi nkonde statuette.
20th century.
Height: 47 cm.
Dark-coloured, medium-weight wood.
The hair consists of a layer of black-coloured clay. The slightly parted mouth reveals two upper teeth. The face, which complements the figure’s dynamic posture, conveys aggression and anger, effectively conveyed by the pupils centred in the middle of the eyes. The body bears a large mirror on its underside and is pierced by numerous spikes of various kinds, bearing witness to the many times the statuette has been activated. A piece of cloth serves as a loincloth.
