Description
NKISI/VILI Yombe/Vili nkisi statuette (Kongo). 20th century. Height: 50 cm. Heavy, light-brown wood, cord, fabric, cowrie shell. A cowrie shell (Monetaria moneta) adorns the headdress, which is held in place by a dark cord. The eyebrows are shaped like a tail. The face is finely crafted: the ears, nose and full lips are delicately carved. The neck is powerful. The body is covered with dark seeds fixed in place by a dark resin. It features a ventral mirror. The toenails are clearly defined. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection. Description: This fetish conveys a sense of benevolence. The profusion of seeds forming its torso suggests it was likely intended to bring wealth and happiness. The head is oversized. It reveals glass eyes believed to possess divinatory powers. The fixed gaze seems to scrutinise the afterlife in a timeless manner.
