Description
TSANGUI Mask. From Ekie, a village near Mayoumba (Gabon). 20th century. Height: 33 cm. Made of kapok wood with a kaolin patina covering the entire face. Red pigmentation is visible around the mouth. The headdress and central shell, with a blackish patina, are adorned with nails. Traces of carving with an adze are visible on the inside of the mask. The eyes are surrounded by figure-of-eight scarification lines, which connect to the frontal and temporal scarifications typical of the Tsangui culture. The lips express a slight, enigmatic disdain. Description: The Tsèngi people are found in Larstoursville, Moanda and Bakoumba. Compared to the form of the classical mukudji mask, curved lines emphasise the eyeballs. The one-piece headdress is clearly distinct. The Tsangui style marks the transition between the art of southern Gabon (Ngounié) and that of the Republic of the Congo. It is a so-called ‘oriental’ style which influences and is influenced by neighbouring peoples (the Nzébi, in particular).
