LUMBU Stick-type fetish. From Nkomie, near Tchibanga (Gabon). 20th century. Height: 33 cm + stem: 9 cm. An IR spectroscopy dating certificate (G. Matthaes patent) from the Museo d’Arte e Scienza, Milan, no. 3AD-2796, indicates the date as 1936 ± 6 years. Light-coloured wood, dark patina with traces of resin in certain areas of the body. The figure wears a dome-shaped headdress. Uniquely, it features two recesses designed to hold objects believed to possess magical powers: a small chest cavity and a large dorsal cavity. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection. Description: This fetish statuette was originally embedded in the ground.
