Description
KIDUMU Mask of a kidumu master or senior brotherhood chief. 20th century. Height: 42 cm. Lightweight wood. Border featuring touraco feathers at the top and raffia strips at the bottom. Head covering made of raffia fabric. At the back, a cord around the mouth to make the mask easier to wear. The interplay of the colours black (symbolising the earthly world, society and the family group) and white (symbolising the invisible world and tranquillity) in the mask, together with the red fabric (symbolising vital force, energy and authority) of the surrounding fabric reinforces the symbolism of the close union between the invisible world and the visible world, expressed by the contiguity of the upper half (the invisible world) and the lower half (the visible world). This mask is replete with meaningful pictograms. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection. Bibliography: Published in *Le Souffle des Esprits*, Les Éditions de l’Amateur, Pierre & Hadrien Redouin, 2012, p. 173 (meaning of the pictograms).
