Description
SHAMAYE Reliquary 20th century. Height: 30 cm Wooden core covered with a veneer of copper and brass. The face and neck are covered with strips of copper. A vertical brass band divides the face in two, upon which a nose, also made of brass, has been placed. The headdress is made of brass. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection. Bibliography: Published in *Le Souffle des Esprits*, Les Éditions de l’Amateur, Pierre & Hadrien Redouin, 2012, p. 207. Description: In a society where villages moved through the forest according to the conditions necessary for survival, relics enabled people to carry with them the memory and protection of the clan and to continue honouring their ancestors. A dwelling is but a temporary place. Only genealogy enables an individual to find their place. The connection to the past afforded by the possession of ancestral relics and their symbols is the sole means by which an individual can orient themselves within the memory of a social space experienced more in terms of duration than of extent. Such is the purpose of this shamaye reliquary.
