Description
TSOGO Tsogho mask with horns. 20th century. Height: 42 cm. Light wood covered with white kaolin. The headdress is dyed black. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection. Bibliography: Published in *Le Souffle des Esprits*, Les Éditions de l’Amateur, Pierre & Hadrien Redouin, 2012, p. 192. Description: According to Pierre Sallée (Statuaire et tradition orale, ORSTOM, 1973), there are several possible interpretations of the horns on this type of mask. They could represent the stylised side plaits of certain female hairstyles within the group, or the quasi-zoomorphic frontal protuberances found in some depictions of demonic spirits. As the beauty of certain young girls is sometimes compared to that of an antelope, these two horn-like protrusions could serve as a metonymic allusion superimposed upon the stylised representation of two plaited locks of a woman’s hair.
