Tsogho temple artefact
20th century.
Height: 17 cm; Width: 35 cm.
This sculpture, which is generally shaped like half a scroll, is covered in white plaster on the forehead and cheeks. Black plaster covers the eyes, ears, nose and lips, as well as the border of the mask. The mask itself is carved with triangles arranged in a garland pattern. The forehead is adorned with four lozenges arranged in a cross. The ears are elongated outwards.

Description:
This decorative element, whose form draws on that of Christian angels, is carved on the frontispiece of the entrance portico to the nzimba of the Tsogho temple.
