Description
KWÈLÉ Pipibudzè mask. 20th century. Height: 30 cm. Light-coloured wood with a dark patina around the edges and a crusty patina of white kaolin and ochre on the inside of the face. Above the skull, a wicker fastening allows the mask to be hung up: it could be worn or suspended. Below the chin, a wooden beard is encircled by cord. The eyes are almond-shaped (resembling coffee beans), whilst the eyebrows and mouth are merely suggested by dotted lines. The ears are adorned with earrings. Provenance: Pierre Redouin Collection. Description: The face features a heart-shaped form typical of the Kwèlé world.
