Description:
Presumed to be a ‘chief of the land’ mask. This mask very expressively conveys the power of the chief who owns it, drawing its symbolism from that of the gorilla and its might. The prominent forehead, similar to that of a gorilla, gives the mask a very stern and unsettling appearance, reinforced by the predominant black colour, which symbolises the material world: this is thought to be the mask of a ‘chief of the earth’ rather than that of a spirit (indeed, it bears no traces of kaolin, which, according to custom, would evoke the invisible world).
