Description
FANG Fang ritual figure, ‘bulu ngi’. 20th century. Height: 52 cm. An IR spectroscopy dating certificate (G. Matthaes patent) from the Museo d’Arte e Scienza, Milan, no. 6AF-3631, indicates a date of 1948 ± 8 years. Hard, heavy wood. The figure’s overall appearance exudes great strength and serenity. The left hand rests on the stomach (the seat of all energies for the Fang people) and the right hand holds a fruit. The retractable phallus is held in place by a cord. A chest cavity and a dorsal cavity were used to store magical medicines. A spike is inserted into a piece of cloth impregnated with medicinal substances within the dorsal cavity.
